I’ve come across a few American expatriates, who are sharing their experiences of living and retiring overseas, with regular dispatches via their blogs. Their stories are almost always, interesting, illuminating, and instructional. Today I found one blog author, that exemplifies the spirit of Green Retirement like no other, Joe Bageant in Belize.
Joe Bageant lives and writes, from the small beach town, of Hopkins Village Belize. And he manages to survive on less than $5,000 per year. He’s proud of the small amount of money he can live on, even wishes it could be less, racked with guilt over his years of consumption. Yet, he manages to maintain his writing career, publishing books, and contributing articles to online magazines - such as Counterpunch.com
Using the Green Retirement method of planning, Joe Bageant’s standard of living of $5,000 per year, could be maintained with as little as $125,000 in retirement savings. But before you run off and retire to Belize, you should check out the Joe Bageant Blog, and decide if you would settle for a Hopkins Tin Cup Martini.
