Do The World A Favor And Retire
From an Earth Day Fashion Show in Lawrence Kansas, to a Party for the Planet in Billings Montana, communities across the nation are celebrating Earth Day 2008 this coming week. In big cities, and small towns, millions of Americans will participate in Earth Day festivities.
If you want to find an Earth Day 2008 activity near you, a good list can be found here, on this Earth Day website. Awareness, money, and consciousness will all be raised. Citizens will help clean parks, beaches, and learn how they can help save the planet.
What does Earth Day have to do with retirement? Retiring is possibly the single best act, you can personally take, to help reverse global warming. When you retire, your consumption of the earth’s resources, dramatically declines. Your work commute ends. Sparing the air of tons of global warming producing carbon dioxide. In retirement you live in one place. When you worked, two places needed to be maintained, cooled and heated for your convenience. These are only two, of the most obvious examples, of how your retirement helps save the planet.
There is also dry cleaning, fast food lunches, take-out coffee, and many other examples of over consumption you probably don’t realize. Retirement forces you to switch, from a consumption lifestyle, to a conservation lifestyle. So this Earth Day 2008, if you want to be a true environmentalist, clean the creek and then retire.

Good tips. If you are in your 30’s, with a young family and not enough in your IRA or RRSP a good idea is to tele-commute. (Work from home) This would have the same effect as early retirement. I really enjoy your blog. We are thinking the same way.
