Laid Off? Think Retirement

December 11th, 2008 · 2 Comments

What is the first thing you should consider if you have been laid off?  Retirement. Before you write your resume, look for jobs on the internet, or buy a new suit, you should first eliminate the possibility of early retirement.  Why consume your retirement savings, looking for another job, if you can retire today?

Millions of Americans have already been laid off and millions more are facing layoffs, and the sad fact is that many are not aware, that they can retire today.

“But I’m not rich”, you say, “I don’t have enough savings to retire.”  “I tried an online retirement calculator, and it told me that I needed  over a million dollars to retire, I don’t have anywhere near that amount of savings.”

First, you don’t need to be rich to retire, and second, online retirement calculators are all wrong.  The retirement industry uses a worthless guess, 70% to 80% of your current salary, to determine how much savings you will need.  This guess, causes Americans to save more than is necessary, and delays their retirement by many years.

Green Retirement Planning calculates how much savings you need for retirement, based on how much you will spend in retirement, a far more accurate formula and method. For the average American couple earning $80,000 per year, traditional retirement planning calculates, that the couple will need $1,600,000 to retire.  If the same couple creates a $2,500 per month retirement budget, Green Retirement calculates with much greater accuracy, that the couple will need $600,000 to retire - a million dollar difference!

Green Retirement gives you control of your retirement savings needs and encourages you to live a green lifestyle, enabling you to retire with less savings and many years earlier.   For example, if you reduce your monthly retirement expenses by $100, you reduce the amount of retirement savings you need by $30,000.  The more you reduce your consumption in retirement, the Greener your lifestyle, the less savings you need for retirement.

On the Green Retirement website are several Free Retirement Calculators. Find out if you can retire today,  compare Green Retirement vs. Traditional retirement, and discover how much savings you really need to retire.

If you are a layoff victim check out the Free Retirement Calculators and find out if you can retire today, otherwise you may be burning through your retirement savings looking for a job and stressing out, when you could be lying on a beach somewhere.

Many people who have retired find themselves right back out on the job market. There are several reasons for this, including income, boredom and habit. There are many full time and part time seniors jobs. Depending on your health, fitness, ambition and needs, the possibilities are numerous. Being in retirement doesn’t mean you have to park yourself in that rocking chair just yet.

    Rose:
Thanks for the comment. Why do Americans have this concept that retirement means, sitting on a couch flipping on the t.v., and then wait for death? And, why are American’s identity, defined by their job and rank?

Why are there so many websites pushing retirement and senior jobs? So many newspaper and magazine articles that glorify people who continue working into their 80’s and 90’s? I’m no psychologist, but it appears to me, that this country needs some serious analysis.
