Medicare at 55!

December 7th, 2009 · No Comments

As the U.S. Senate debates the Health Care bill, progressive Democrats have proposed lowering the eligible age to receive Medicare from 65 to 55 years old, almost exactly the same idea I proposed on the Green Retirement Blog on December 4th.

Senators who support lowering the age of eligibility for Medicare to 55 may not realize it, but not only does lowering the Medicare age expand health care to more Americans, it also helps reduce unemployment by helping more American workers to retire early.

As I wrote in my article, where I called for lowering the Medicare eligibility age through the “Early Retirement Recovery Act“, many Americans in this age group who have either lost their jobs, or have given up looking for a job, will enter into retirement with the knowledge that their health care is secure.

Millions of Americans who are delaying their retirements, will benefit financially from having affordable health care available through Medicare, and will accelerate their retirements plans.

Millions of Americans leaving the unemployment rolls and the workforce, from lowering the Medicare eligibility age to 55, will dramatically and positively reduce unemployment in America.   Expanding health care, reducing unemployment, creating new jobs, all from lowering the Medicare age to 55 is the smartest idea to come out of Washington since Medicare!.

Do yourself a favor, take a moment of your time to call your senator and congressperson, and ask them to support reducing the Medicare age to 55.
