Italian is still spoken in the cafes and restaurants of North Beach, a San Francisco neighborhood, rated one of the top ten neighborhoods in the U.S.A. First settled by Italian immigrants in the 1880’s, North Beach has retained it’s European flavor, and is home to many French and Germans, as well as Italians. Nestled in a valley between, Telegraph and Russian Hills, North Beach is adjacent to Chinatown and close to downtown.
Local and foreign tourists flock to North Beach, to enjoy it’s many fine restaurants, unique architecture, and boisterous nightlife. Although small in size, only a few blocks in any direction, North Beach is a distinctive San Francisco neighborhood. It’s residents reflect the neighborhood, very friendly, out going, and proud. Besides food, North Beach loves music, and live music is constantly being performed in it’s many nightclubs, restaurants and bars. Don’t be surprised, if you sit down to eat an Italian restaurant, and get serenaded by the owner.
North Beach is also known as the home of the Beat Poets, and the famous City Lights Bookstore, still thrives as an independent and influential bookstore. Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, and many other famous poets and writers called North Beach home. And their presence is still felt today, in coffee shops such as Cafe Trieste, and in the streets named after them.
In a homogenized culture and landscape, North Beach has a soul, and is a wonderful choice for a city retirement.
