Important update below regarding the new USPS layoff plan.
The United States Postal Service announced that it will offer voluntary early retirement to 150,000 of it’s postal workers. The USPS did not say if it will offer any financial incentives.
According to an article from the AP “The American Postal Workers Union issued a statement Friday saying: “Retirement is a personal matter, and the union defers to the decisions of employees who meet the qualifications.”
However, the union said it continues to challenge the Postal Service’s authority to offer voluntary early retirement without including severance pay.”
I agree completely with the Union, what incentive is there for anyone to take early retirement, if there is no incentive?
In any case, if you are a postal worker, there is a way for you to find out if a future early retirement incentive package makes sense for you. Green Retirement has a Voluntary Early Retirement Incentive Calculator, that calculates how much savings you need to retire, helping you decide if you should take the USPS early retirement incentive.

Update: 8/12/11
The United States Postal Service has unveiled plans to layoff 120,00o additional employees and eliminate pension contributions for surviving postal workers.
My advice to USPS Postal workers facing layoffs is to go to our new Free Early Retirement website and begin planning your early retirement before you get laid off. Our new site has a calculator that will tell you if you can retie early.
We also offer Free Early Retirement Planning Software that enables you to plan, manage, and maintain a safe and secure early retirement.

After 31 years of carrying mail, with another 4 years left to go for the so-called “full retirement” benefits of the civil service retirement system, I am taking full advantage of the early retirement being offered. And after reading your blog I am more convinced than ever that this is the right thing to do. The post office is going to pay me around 2500 dollars a month to not work!! What a deal!!!
Thanks for the eye-opening information, I will be sure to tell the other wage-slaves there that there is indeed a way out and to check out your blog.
