If you answered Yes or True to:

7-10 – Sionara, adios, au revoir, retiring overseas won’t be a challenge.

5-7 – Retiring abroad may require some adjustments.

0-5 – You should stay home.

Retiring overseas, in a foreign country, is not for everyone. The idea of an overseas retirement is appealing to many people for many different reasons. Some people may choose to retire abroad seeking adventure. Others to get away. And many people consider an overseas retirement, because they don’t believe, that they can afford to retire in the United States.

I have lived, traveled, even owned businesses in foreign countries, over half my life.  I have seen Americans flourish and flop overseas. Some Americans make an easy adjustment, others return to the United States bitter, success depends mostly on your personality and an open mind.

If you don’t want to retire abroad, but feel you have no choice, then I strongly suggest that you discover Green Retirement Planning (host of this Early Retirement Blog).  Using the Green Retirement Planning method a couple can retire in the United States on only Social Security.  Visit our Early Retirement Website and try our free retirement calculator to discover how much savings you need to retire.

This is probably the most difficult decision I have concerning retirement.

I think for me it comes to how often I would be able to afford to come back to the US to see family and friends which could add to the costs of retiring abroad. Having said that, living somewhere else really can be rewarding.

    Barcelona, here I come!
